Let me tell you one of the conservative principles I believe in.
The beginning of this country was in large part because people were trying to tell those who lived here what to believe, who to believe in, etc. Not a good idea back then, and it's not a good idea now.

So while I absolutely support, at a personal level, things that are described as socially conservative, I am absolutely conservative about maintaining that separation of church and state. And that America should never be about conformity, especially when it comes to religion.
In fact, when it comes to individual rights, I am just shy of being militant about it. Again, this nation was born on the foundation of individual rights. For all. We the people, while imperfectly, means everyone. Not an exclusive few.
And if you don't think that isn't a conservative idea, you need to check the definition.
