/ Just finished reading Kai-Fu Lee's "AI Superpowers" (thanks for the recommendation @JonathanZWhite)
smile.amazon.com/AI-Superpowers…
/ Found it equally informative about AI and about the state of the tech industry in China. The "big idea" is essentially that with progress in deep learning, the next phase of AI development is less about true breakthroughs and more about access to data...
/ ...and this is where the Chinese tech industry wins handily, with more data, better collected, and more "online-to-offline" interactions happening through mobile apps and mobile wallets, generating vastly better data.
/ And in AI, a good team with more data beats a great team with less data. So we can expect the Chinese tech companies to do better in the phase of AI implementation (or so goes the book's thesis...)
/ A few passages that were super interesting.

What would Chinese dominance in any form of tech feel like to Americans?
/ Is the temptation to describe Chinese companies as copycats of American companies doing the US tech sector a huge disservice in helping underestimate the level of innovation in Asia?
/ Was there a distinct moment in time when the Chinese tech industry 'got creative'?
/ How does Chinese city design drive tech in China?
/ Does AI inevitably lead to a natural monopoly?
/ And if it does, which sectors are most susceptible?
/ And would antitrust law need to be updated for this new form of AI-driven natural monopoly?
/ For those interested, check out this TED talk with the main concepts in the book. ted.com/talks/kai_fu_l…
