It’s a very peculiar thing that a dozen students calling for an event to be cancelled gets more press than when the call comes from state legislators or even whole state political parties. I can’t quite wrap my brain around it, but I’ve seen this too many times now to deny it.
Some recent examples for the incredulous, ending with a poll.

Two weeks ago, the Nebraska Republican Party successfully pressured former Senator Bob Kerrey to withdraw as commencement speaker for Creighton University. Little publicity outside Nebraska.

A month ago, the entire Republican apparatus in California lined up to get a UC Davis prof fired. If you did hear about this incident, is was probably because of me. Sorry, but it's true.

Last week, the Massachusetts Republican Party launched a pressure campaign to get an event on Israel/Palestine cancelled at UMass.

These are just from the last thirty days, but there are so many other examples from this past semester alone. So compared to heaps of coverage when ten or twenty students behave badly, why the lack of interest or attention?
POLL:
1) What students do/believe matters for the long term
2) The politicians are just posturing; the students actually mean it
3) A political double standard
4) Something else
Oh! One more very important thing, in case anyone is ready with a retort: Ever since that Clover thread a while back, I've been DMing various right-of-center/libertarian journalists who work this beat links to cases just like the ones above. So far, no interest.
Sorry, here's one more. Just about seven days ago, Connecticut House Minority Leader Themis Klarides called up the president of Trinity College (a private institution, btw) trying to get a professor punished for comments he made on social media.

While a bit different, this comment from an Arizona State Representative is just too precious not to share. Imagine someone in student government (as opposed to, you know, actual government) saying something similar.

And if you're interested, here's basically what I think is going on. It's not bias. At least not for the most part.
