Waking up to lots of instant takes on local election results, recalling that these days a lot of counting takes place on a Friday, and further recalling plenty of breakthrough nights for Lib Dems in the past. Will wait before declaring significance...
I'm sure the Conservatives having lost a quarter of their seats so far and therefore living down to worst expectations will be very pleased that most of the local election takes I'm seeing are about Labour's result / position on Brexit (both confused)
Tend to think this is right, just that 'sort it' is such an ambiguous message as to be basically useless. And so we'll carry on going round in circles, because whatever anyone claims these local elections say nothing particularly clear on leave / remain
Incidentally a quarter of Labour's net councillor losses came in Ashfield where a local independent group swept the board, and another chunk in Sunderland where there seem to have been local factors. So all bit flat overall
Those saying the election results so far prove that remain was the overwhelming winner of the night might want to ponder where on remain / leave most of those 'independents' are likely to be - as before
Also this is an interesting snippet re. the election if it is shared nationwide
Incidentally there are a lot more local election results still to come today, and early indications suggest things are going to be getting a lot worse for the Conservatives and better for the Lib Dems (and might not look quite so bad for Labour but we'll see)
Not sure why the big headline of these election isn't the Conservatives doing badly even compared to low expectations. Can understand the anger in local associations. By comparison Labour just flat, obviously good for Greens, Lib Dems, independents
