NEW: @NBCNews has uncovered two more deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning in HUD-subsidized housing -- a Michigan couple married for 35 years. Their grandkids were visiting when police found their bodies. My latest investigation: nbcnews.com/politics/white…
After @NBCNews's first story, HUD has promised to require detectors for the first time. But it still hasn't released a proposal, and Congress hasn't acted either. Meanwhile, more people are dying.
Our count is now 13 deaths since the beginning of 2003 -- four of them since the beginning of 2019 alone. The actual death toll is likely to be higher, as these were based on media accounts, confirmed by local authorities. Not every death makes the news.
Neither HUD nor anyone else is tracking these deaths. HUD housing is very decentralized and increasingly privatized, making even basic life/death info much less transparent. None of the local news reports ID-ed latest victims as HUD residents - took me days of digging to confirm.
