1/ Just finished Frank Herbert’s Destination: Void and I’ve never felt so conflicted about a sci-fi book
2/ It’s probably the most realistic account possible of what the emergence of AI would actually look/feel/be like: chaos and terror with flashes of brilliant insight but mostly nonsensical clouds of concepts and words far beyond human understanding. It’s really a masterpiece
3/ But he went too manic, too chaotic, too random. All I’m left with is a sense of terrible mystical foreboding of what such an event might entail for the human race. First time I’ve felt that way, despite reading Bostrum and others who are intellectually more rigorous
4/ But I just downloaded the next 3 books in the Pandora Sequence, 27 hours of reading. So I guess he got me. It’s like wanting to extend even a bad trip because you know normal waking consciousness is even worse
