The fact that you keep centering the intellectual needs of Savarnas, by turning every atrocity against Dalits into a ‘learning moment’, for them to get how caste works, says a lot about who you think still matter.
You are doing a lot of damage by reducing our lives (and deaths) to mere stats, just so your friends can (finally) understand how brutal caste is. We are not data points. We are human beings, whose privacy and dignity matter.
Every time a friend or an acquaintance asks me, “but how has caste affected you?”, I’m essentially expected to replay every shitty thing that has happened to me and my loved ones - so that this person can consider ‘buying my logic’ around caste oppression.
But for someone who isn’t already aware, despite the overwhelming evidence, no amount of me showing my vulnerability is going to convert them. The onus is also not on me to do this kind of ‘teaching’.
Should allies feel the need to teach these ostriches, they must use data points from their own casteist households - there is a LOT of it there. You don’t need OUR experiences of discrimination to make a point.
What if atrocities against Dalits are no longer happening? ‘Cause that’s what we REALLY after. What then? Caste ain’t a thing anymore? And the professor in you will have nothing to teach?
