1. What can we learn about ISIS supporters based on the many different subtitled language translations that have appeared online since the emergence of a new video showing Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi? Some insights to follow, would welcome other thoughts (Image- Portuguese translation)
2. Ever since the video release on April 29, supporters of ISIS have rallied around their Emir, the caliph of the now caliphateless caliphate to strengthen their resolve and reaffirm their online resilience- something they refer to as 'media jihad' in 'Wilayat Internet'
3. Online, ISIS created a "sense of virtual community to which those who otherwise felt adrift and detached from their real communities were drawn" writes @jgeltzer in an excellent piece for @TheAtlantic theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
4. Supporters of Islamic State have been galvanized by Baghdadi's appearance, Complete subtitled videos in English, Spanish and Turkish appeared online just a day later. Interesting to note the devolved non-cohesive operation they have become
5. New issues of ISIS' one-time flagship magazine "Rumiyah" often appeared in multiple languages in synchronized manner, emanating from Telegram channels closely linked to Islamic State. Now its a supporter effort in part. Notice plain English subtitle background vs fancy Spanish
6. Translations often seem high quality indicating someone who is familiar with the language - not a Google Translate effort. 'ISIS de central' wants you to know they are diversified & believe 'We are everywhere'. Where these supporters might be- question for another thread.
7. Sometimes mistakes & oddities do happen though. Somehow Geschenke or "Gifts" crept into the title of the German translation of "In the Hospitality of the Emir of the Believers". Thank you @bjoernstritzel for this insight
@bjoernstritzel 8. Similar comment from an Italian official back in January. ISIS claim for an attack in Syria translated by an Islamic State linked Italian media group. A typo 'imobscata' for Imboscata (ambush) in an otherwise well translated sentence indicates a real person, not auto translate
@bjoernstritzel 9. How does ISIS keep their message online? At @JihadoScope we've collected 100s of links to video, file sharing and cloud based platforms as well as social media. Many have been removed but many instances have slipped through detection be it user flagged or AI enhanced
10. In addition to links from each new translation, salvoes of new links to original video continue to spread by ISIS supporters. Not just via 'elephant in the room' Telegram, many URLs are from outside the platform, possibly hedge against censorship (all your eggs in one basket)
11. ISIS supporters also have their own file-sharing cloud or two. No idea why they're up so long. And when all else fails there is trusted old Google. If you know what you're looking for.... I could have made Hijrah to the moon & back. Never seen any #CVE redirect method mind
12. Guess who showed up late to the party? Italian supporters of Islamic State finally release a subtitled version of Baghdadi's recent video entitled 'Nell'ospitalità dell'emiro dei credenti'
