Interesting opinion piece about how the decision to build a very temporary place for MPs to meet while the Palace of Westminster is renovated (at a cost of over half a billion pounds) seems to have been made with basically zero scrutiny. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
How much better would it be to spend that money on a new permanent home designed to modern standards, and with a non-confrontational seating arrangement rather than the current one designed to facilitate face-offs? The PoW could be restored and preserved for the nation.
And imagine if that new home incorporated the latest in biometric readers all over the building, so MPs could confirm their identities definitively and vote without all having to traipse into narrow lobbies like cattle being herded into pens? Would encourage more participation.
No possibility of fraud, and instant, totally transparent results.

Problem is, a lot of people seem to be excited about Nigel Farage's interview on #Marr this morning for the wrong reasons. Yes, he got shouty. Yes, he refused to answer questions. But if you watch it carefully, there will probably be half a dozen usable soundbites he can exerpt.
It's unalloyed Trump playbook. Show yourself facing off an "aggressive" media that isn't asking the "right" questions and sprinkle with a generous amount of "betrayal" and "attack on democracy". Consequence is, viewers think you lost. But your base by and large won't be watching.
But they might see that 15 second clip somebody forwarded to them on Twitter or Facebook of you facing down that bully interviewer and desperately trying to get him to focus on the thing that matters i.e. the European elections.

Crazy Friday proposal: situate the new (temporary) Parliament building near Heathrow. Reasonable connections to London, accessible from other parts of the UK (or at least certainly no less so than Westminster) and once the Elizabeth Line opens will be even easier to get to.
Shop around, and acquire (or lease for a few years) one of the hotels inside the free bus zone around Heathrow, one with a large enough central conference space to convert into a debating chamber. Keep a few bedrooms as bedrooms, turn the rest into offices and meeting spaces.
And at the end of the period (which, let's face it, will be longer than predicted because you can bet the renovation of the Palace of Westminster will over-run) it can be turned back into a hotel.

A short thought about the Palace of Westminster.

Helping to get R&R over the (first) line was probably my proudest achievement while I worked in Parliament.

But be under no illusion. The Palace is at *much* higher risk of a catastrophic fire than Notre Dame was.

We already know that there are thousands of serious fire hazards in the building. Electrical wires next to hot gas. Piping that is waiting to burst. Things that have been quick-fixed over the years but which could cause break again causing a massive fire at any moment.

And when they do go up - and it’s a when, not an if - we know that the building’s design will mean that fire spreads rapidly. Air vents dotted throughout the building, which the Victorians thought would prevent fire, will actually spread it.

As the Champions League and Europa League reach the quarter-final stage, I took a quick look at the latest available revenue and wages data for those clubs still in the competition. Some brief comparisons in the following thread.
Three clubs in the Champions League quarter-finals have over half a billion pounds revenue, led by Barcelona £612m, followed by the two Manchester clubs, #MUFC £590m and #MCFC £500m. Other English clubs: #LFC £455m and #THFC £379m. Lowest revenue by far at Ajax £81m & Porto £94m.
Barcelona £431m have by far the highest wage bill (even after excluding other sports), followed by #MUFC £296m. #LFC £264m and #MCFC £260m are closely matched, way ahead of the other English club #THFC £148m. Porto and Ajax only £75m and £47m respectively.

Let’s talk sewage…
From the mid 1700’s to the mid 1800’s the British government was quite literally trying to clean up London’s act, building more sewers and water pipes. By 1856 London had over 300 sewers (including a pair of covered rivers), and around half a million cesspits.
Cesspits are holes in the ground full of human waste that, during the Victorian era, were generally emptied out every 8-10 years. I want to pause here to inform you that the people who dug the solid waste out of cesspits were called “Gong Farmers”. Really. Just take that in.
Once dug out, the waste from cesspits was taken to specific sites, the ironically named Mount Pleasant in Clerkenwell occupied 7.5 acres by 1780. Many of the cesspits would overflow, giving work to the “Scavengers” (actual job title) who cleaned the streets of all general waste.

Liverpool’s 2016/17 financial results included their highest ever revenue, despite not playing in Europe, though they finished 4th in the Premier League and reached the semi-finals of the EFL Cup. Some thoughts in the following thread #LFC
#LFC converted £20m loss before tax to £40m profit with revenue growing by 21% (£62m) to a record £364m, though profit on player sales was down £4m at £38m (mainly Christian Benteke, Jordon Ibe, Joe Allen & Martin Skrtel), as no repeat of Raheem Sterling’s big money sale to City.
#LFC revenue was driven by the new Premier League TV deal, though partly offset by no Europa League money, with a net increase in broadcasting income of £31m to £154m. The expanded Main Stand saw match day rise £11m to £74m, while commercial was up £21m to £136m.
