I begin today's rant with a tortured metaphor. (1/12)
You pay for gas, and you pay for underpants. (2/12)
You buy your gas from BP, and you buy your underpants from Amazon. Don't @ me. (3/12)
If someone told you that you needed a single dashboard to view your gasoline spend in the context of your underpants budget, you would back away slowly while not taking your eyes off of them for a second. (4/12)
Why then do so many companies insist you need to view your GCP, Azure, and AWS spend in the same dashboard? (5/12)
They run different workloads for your business, or at least they damn well should because multi-cloud for a given workload is invariably the wrong move. (6/12)
Seriously, it is. See vimeo.com/album/5825745/… for my 37 minute data-backed rant on the topic. (7/12)
The billing dimensions are different, the confusion levels are similar, and there's no direct comparison that makes sense at a resource level. (8/12)
The comparisons that are viable to show are a level or two higher up in a business context--and business context is something that cloud visibility dashboards are completely lacking. (9/12)
There is no API for business insight. (10/12)
A more cynical interpretation might be "if you just need visibility in one provider you'd be nuts to pay a third party for it, just badger the provider into improving their dashboard, so we have no alternative business model." (11/12)
I remain steadfast in my opinion that a big driver behind multi-cloud discussions is a sea of vendors who depend upon you making a poor decision, lest they have nothing to sell you. (12/12)
