We now know re the staying of charges against ViceAdmiral Mark Norman that the story below was utter nonsense and an attempt by the Trudeau government to mislead the public: Harper's approval needed to release some files requested in Norman case ctvnews.ca/canada/harper-… #cdnpoli
At the time Harper immediately denied it, tweeting:, 'This story is false and should be corrected. I have indicated no objection to the release of any document relevant to the Norman case. This is a transparent effort to deflect attention from the current government.'
Now we know why. Not only did Harper have no objection to releasing documents, cabinet ministers from the Harper era were ready to testify IN NORMAN'S DEFENCE: Former Harper ministers MacKay, Kenney and O'Toole helped Vice-Admiral Norman's defence cbc.ca/news/politics/…
And yet none were questioned by the RCMP or the Crown, other than on a few peripheral issues. They ended up contacting Norman's defence team and Kenney and MacKay say they believe some of the information they provided helped lead to the charges being stayed against Norman.
O'Toole, while downplaying his own role, said the real problem Norman's defence team faced "was the slow and deliberate delays by the Trudeau government on the release of information that Mark Norman needed to defend himself" which Norman's counsel Marie Henein has also said.
What's now clear is that the Trudeau government, in both the SNC-Lavalin case and this one, attempted to politically interfere in the course of justice.
Liberal tactics included pressuring the attorney-general and her staff, planting false & misleading stories in the media to smear opponents and divert attention from themselves and, according to Henein in the Norman case, telling witnesses what they could and could not say.
A cynic might say of Liberal apologists in this country -- since they're always getting hysterical about the Trump White House -- that they should start worrying more about Trudeau's PMO and the PCO. Of course, that will never happen.
