1/ Mother's day started as political activism. It should have remained so. I still celebrate my mother, the strongest advocate for science I knew.

2/ Her best friend from college (it will sound crazy, but she kept perfect notes of Dobzhansky's classes, loved them and managed to be creationist and evolutionist at the same time) was a Catholic. They are both 93. Until recently, I still overheard their fights about evolution.

3/ My mother has been defending evolution against any attack for 75 years. She's a fierce atheist, like my father. She does "have a conversation with Saint Anthony" when important objects are lost. I tried to understand this but it's a futile attempt.

4/ After all, that's Brazil, the land of miscegenation and syncretism. It's all good. Or, ar Czernobog would say, "it good". Still, my mother remains a fierce defender of science, atheism and all things reason (except for Saint Anthony - don't touch that).

5/ For those not into the history of biology, this is Dobzhansky. Try to figure out how you can be his fan and a creationist (my aunt, my mother's best friend and best adversary as well) at the same time. Again, just leave it...
