1/ My Significant Other, who has 10X more followers than I do from participating in those #FBRParty things that I strongly oppose, is engaged in an experiment: instead of posting witty obviousness and outrage (and getting thousands of likes), he is posting content.
2/ The result is interesting: he barely gets any attention from his "huge crowd of resisters" who do such great lip service to the cause of democracy but don't seem that interested in making informed decisions.
3/ They still do engage (a lot) with accounts that repeat old news in fewer words and more emotion, they enjoy strongly emotional words and expressions (they love, hate, are sick, etc) and they happily engage in follow-backs.
4/ The scary part for me is that they score high on the RWA scale. They are the reason all the 22 D candidates can ignore policy specialists and engage in populist propaganda. Scary, isn't it? If you are reading me, you are not them. Here is the link:

1/ Mother's day started as political activism. It should have remained so. I still celebrate my mother, the strongest advocate for science I knew.

2/ Her best friend from college (it will sound crazy, but she kept perfect notes of Dobzhansky's classes, loved them and managed to be creationist and evolutionist at the same time) was a Catholic. They are both 93. Until recently, I still overheard their fights about evolution.
3/ My mother has been defending evolution against any attack for 75 years. She's a fierce atheist, like my father. She does "have a conversation with Saint Anthony" when important objects are lost. I tried to understand this but it's a futile attempt.

@DrSprankle 1/ Eric, although I agree with you, I believe the path to debunking the myths about sex work are best accomplished by systematically giving voice to sex workers' experience and discourse.
@DrSprankle 2/ It's also important to define sex work, which is not restricted to prostitution and the educated public has little idea of its complexity. Many years ago, as a left-leaning liberal that I always was, I also believed prostitutes were forced labor, especially in Brazil.
@DrSprankle 3/ (I am originally from Brazil and a scholar). All the documentaries about the "zonas" (old time prostitution neighborhoods) were sickening and our reaction was to "fight their oppressors". When the prostitutes' movement grew, got legalization and professional regulation...

1/ @NAMICommunicate Hi. This month I would like to do three things: 1) open the 60K word book file that I failed to hand in to the publisher about "strength and death (at least open). Anyone would be angry with me: after all, 60K words, the book is done. But the story is not.
2) Start to tell the new things I learned as a scientist and from the 2nd accidentally survived attempt. I was wrong and so is most of the research on suicide, which is the reason it is taking such a drastic turn in terms of #suicide etiology
3) Change the narrative. While keep on confronting guilt trips and debunking harmful popular assumptions, I think there is a way to share the suicidal "condition" experience and how it is never over. I truly believe this is important.

Me : Bizarre question. I'm the wrong person to ask. I'm sick to death of all this "Earth is running out of resources" to "Climate impact" excuses for a "colony on Mars". We should fix the mess we've created or die here ...
... I believe in a moratorium on humans in space, backed by military force (i.e. manned craft to be shot down) until such time as the Earth has been stabilised for all. I know certain wealthy folk who think they'll escape to the stars. I'm all for disappointing them.
What people forget is we currently live on an amazing spaceship with advanced recycling, atmosphere generation and gravity that is way beyond our technical capabilities. We want to travel to somewhere with little of those capabilities because we've fracked this spaceship?

Things I recommend for submitting talk idea:

0️⃣You should tell people that you are "interested in speaking about [fill in your interest] " this can be friends, coworkers, person who sit next to at meetup etc. Can not stress how many opportunity came up because I stated interest
1️⃣(w/ people who are in your field, like JavaScript or WebDev) bounce ideas like... "I was thinking of doing X"

Those conversation usually yield to "would be cool if you can~" or "I wanted to know~" now you have more things to address in proposal other than "I really like X"
2️⃣Now you found a topic that seems other people would be interested in. Often scope is larger than what can fit in 30min talk, think about which one you want to spend more time.

Then write proposal. Check what info they ask you & if there is word limit on submission form.

Lots of white people care more about being called a racist than not saying racist things. They'll do anything to make it about them instead of marginalized groups, often to the point of denying their problems altogether (example: white feminism).
We get so many messages from very concerned anime profiles about us not covering 'anti-white' racist tweets. Some of these are clearly tweets that racists make go viral in order to get us to validate their claims of racism against whites. We see through the bullshit
