An idea that I have but I haven’t specifically articulated:

1. Most people respond as you would expect them to according to the system of incentives around them

2. Some people don’t - and this is IMO because they’re navigating by some other set of incentives, often imaginary
When I reflect on the gifted kids that I grew up with: IMO, a big differentiator of academic performance was family background. If your parents have PhD’s, you’re likelier to get one too. There’s a space on the wall at home where yours is supposed to go. That’s an extra incentive
If you’ve been traumatised, abused, etc - your brain interprets things differently, so the system of incentives that you’re responding to is different

I’m currently experiencing the effect of new incentives in my life - knowing that there are people who care changes my behavior
I could go home tonight and play video games for a couple of hours. Or I could go to bed early, and then wake early to write an essay that I know my new friends would want to read.

I am mostly the same person I was two weeks ago, but my (perceived) incentives have changed.
In a sense, this could be considered in terms of incentive modelling. And it can be entirely imaginary! Tony Robbins has a riff that goes well with this:

1. What do you choose to focus on?

2. What does it mean?

3. What are you going to do about it?
