Attendance currently being taken prior to the vote...
Senator McIntyre's Amendment Defeated 50 - 27 with 1 Abstention
Moving on to more debate on Bill C-71....
Senator David Richards speaking to one of the amendments defeated by the Senate after the Committee vote.
Senator David Richards - Authorisations to Transport - What the gov't proposed is licensed firearm owners must contact Firearms Centre for all transportation issues except going tothe gun range, which accounts for 94% of all ATTs. The majority of ATTs are of no concern...
to the government, yet taking a gun to a gunsmith, a gun show or a border crossing is somehow deemed "dangerous."

How does this make any rational sense? Where is the Public Safety benefit?

HINT: There isn't one.
Senator David Richards: It may not be legally possible to transfer a firearm in need of repair if the Firearm Centre is closed or too busy to answer the phone. This box-checking exercise is inherently unreasonable. This will not stop a single crime.
Proposes amendment to defer 3rd reading and amend Bill C-71 to fix the Authorisation to Transport failures of Bill C-71.
Senator @DonPlett : Thanks Senator Richards for the amendment.

"It is no surprise why I support this amendment."
Senator @DonPlett : This issue has been misrepresented by the government, who claimed their focus would be on stopping criminal misuse of firearms. It's already a crime to transport restricted or prohibited firearms without an Authorization to Transport. Criminals do not qualify
Senator @DonPlett: Lists the currently allowed purposes for transporting a restricted or prohibited firearm.

"The firearm cannot be carried around in the trunk of a car. It can only be carried to or from one of these six prescribed destinations."
Senator @DonPlett: "A restricted weapon already requires an authorisation to transport it anywhere."
Senator @DonPlett: Goes after disingenuous polling firms who ask questions about whether they would support restrictions on transportation of firearms without explaining the current legislative requirements for transportation.
Senator @DonPlett: It is difficult to imagine how converting long term ATTs into short term ATTs will prevent any crime, given the hoops licensed gun owners must go through in order to legally own firearms.
Senator @DonPlett: Details Daniel Balofsky's case and how the government lost the case. Cites the judge's decision stating it is nonsensical to deny such authorization."
Senator @DonPlett: Unlike Airport Security screening, the steps gun owners are being asked to take are meaningless from a public safety standpoint. If they did, gun owners would happily comply. Revoking long term ATTs is the very worst part of Bill C-71.
Senator Andre Pratte: Blathers on about how the "vast majority" of firearms are not covered by Bill C-71's proposed restrictions.
Senator Andre Pratte: Claims it is "extremely difficult" for police to determine if a gun is being transported legally because there is always a legitimate destination somewhere nearby.

#Nonsense
Senator Andre Pratte: Bill C-71 maintains the automatic authorisation for 95% of transport needs for gun owners. Fails to address legitimate concerns or how criminals will be prevented from committing crimes by restricting how legal firearm owners may transport their firearms.
Senator Andre Pratte: The burden on gun owners will be quite light, but will be quite useful in helping police.
Senator Gold asks how any of this fulfils the Liberal campaign promises.

Senator Pratte has no idea.
END OF SESSION.

Sitting is suspended until 8pm EST
