Can I tell you guys a nice story because Twitter is a cesspool and needs a nice story? Ok good. Don’t make me regret it.
So three weeks ago Altima (not his real name), our two year old born in Seth’s Altima (hence the nickname) had his two year old well-visit and his pediatrician expressed concern about his weight. He was dropping off the charts at a fast clip.
I’ve had a few conversations with our pediatrician about our concerns about how little he eats and hearing what we thought was reflux. He didn’t seem concerned bc his weight had been stable. But then he started to fall precipitously off the charts.
Finally he was on board with our being concerned. I posted on Facebook and everyone had the same usual suggestions, smoothies, etc. But a pediatrician friend texted and troubled shot the situation with me. About his reflux and lack of appetite.
She asked if there was a family history of a protein allergy. Our middle son had a severe allergy to the proteins in cows milk, soy and wheat. So she suggested we immediately cut dairy from his diet. My response? “Fuck.” Dairy was literally all he ate. Yogurt and cheese.
But she is smart and never wrong and super not alarmist, so I said we’d give it a go. That was the Sunday before last. Here’s what he looked like. You can see why we were alarmed.
Today, less than two weeks off of dairy, this is what he looks like.
The evening of the first day we took him off dairy we noticed how much he had for dinner. And he has not stopped eating ever since.
