One thing related to my NYT op-ed: Yes, I did drop a small mention of a new Mandel coming this summer. First week in July, to be precise. We are all really excited, we were all not so secretly hoping for a girl.
I haven't mentioned it thusfar for a few reasons. One, I didn't really see a need, I thought I had told most people already. Judging by the messages I've received so far, I was wrong. Sorry about that. Two, it really hasn't affected my day-to-day life in the way the other 3 did.
The debilitating "morning" sickness I had with #1 and #3 and the constant, overwhelming dizziness I had with #2 are not present. I was kind of scared there was something wrong until we hit the 20-week ultrasound, at which point we found out this kid is perfectly healthy.
The third reason I didn't mention it is the biggest. I really didn't want to subject myself to six months of car baby jokes. I'll be honest, I mostly don't find them funny anymore.
That pregnancy and birth was kind of traumatic between vomiting non-stop for nine straight months, day and night, and then having a baby in a gravel parking lot alone.
My new greatest fear, now that the old one has happened, is to have this baby in a random store or public place. So please, don't make that joke.
We're planning on having her at home and have a home birth midwife in place and I've been using that practice from the beginning of this pregnancy (which is another reason I didn't mention it, bc I need more opinions about home birth in my life like I need a hole in the head).
They have all the same certifications and qualifications as the midwives who delivered #1 and #2, and A LOT more expertise than the guy who delivered #3, so we're feeling good about the decision.
