I’ve done more press in the past couple of weeks than I’ve done…ever. By a lot. And it mostly went well! HUGE thanks to some amazing teachers and role models. This thread is a few thoughts, tips, & reflections following the @IPBES #GlobalAssessment media blitz #SciComm [1/10]
All those years of #SciComm training paid off! I’m most grateful for the role playing, so I could see how I came across and adapt. Take training opportunities – you want this drilled into you so you can do it without thinking when the time comes [2/10]
The @IPBES media team prepped us really well, both with clear key messages and practice.
I know I should write out and practice my key messages ahead of time.
Apparently I really should write and practice key messages.
It works. #SciComm [3/10]
The @IPBES media team also knew me, since I tweeted my way through the #IPBES7 #GlobalAssessment plenary. Turns out when the press office knows you, they’re more likely to send reporters your way. #SciComm [4/10]

Respond to press inquiries as fast as you can. You don’t need to talk right away, you can schedule a convo or appearance for later. But they’re working hard, too, and want to know if you’ll be a source #SciComm [5/10]

No really, wear makeup. You look better on TV if you have lips, especially with bad Skype lighting. Boys, too. This is gender neutral. #SciComm [6/10]

Grateful to have been ushered directly into makeup for this one!
If it is a video Skype interview, find or make a plain background & find some way to get your camera up at head height. It’ll make you keep your head up and your extra chins at bay. #SciComm [7/10]
Remote TV appearances are WEIRD. You can hear the hosts & tech, but there’s no video feed. You’ve been warned. #SciComm [8/10]

I did get to awkwardly listen to the very cool story about the Uber strike before this one, though!
Live TV & radio seem intimidating, but I kind of love it. No one can edit what you say, so your message is YOURS. Which does mean you gotta be clear on your message. Also, most are 3 to 5 minutes, so it’s hard to go too off the rails. #SciComm [9/10]
Be YOU! That’s the only way this will work. There’s no right way to be on TV. There is, however: practice, confidence, and professional makeup [10/10]
