Billy Waugh is a long time friend, CIA paramilitary, Green Beret and is the major core of this new book. WaPo just savaged it and now I have to buy it. Billy is in my book Licensed to Kill and Hunting the Jackal. Not sure what happened here but will read. washingtonpost.com/outlook/truly-…
I have spent some time with secret squirrels and operators. The bulk of what they do is tedious, requires lots of planning, paperwork and is not glamorous. The insights are usually about failed opportunities, but when it gets hairy...it is brutal stuff.
There is a mythology around Billy. So much so that a reserve SF guy is pictured as Billy and even as a Horse Soldiers. Billy was SE in Gardez. Horse Soldiers in the north. Real 2001 Billy SAD on the left. Fake 2002 Billy SF on the right
The fake Billy Waugh is a real SF reserve guy. IN fact "Tex" and "Cowboy" may be the most memorable SF guys from the early days of the war. Used in millions of articles and even action figures and video games.
Here is "Cowboy" in video games and in miniature with real rabbit fur beard.
And so on this memorial weekend, lets us remember all warriors, real, imagined, ordinary and extraordinary.
