I am more and more convinced that the obsession with abortion (especially when it comes to the Bible) is about one thing more than anything else: comfort in certainty.
I’ll give evangelical Christians one thing, and one thing only — one of the greatest PR campaigns of all time was calling their position “pro-life,” thus anyone who disagreed was necessarily “anti-life” or “pro-death.”
Of course, there has never been one consistent ‘ethic of life’ when it comes to two millennia of the Jesus movement RE: abortion.

No matter what conservative Christians tell you. The Church has been all over the map for most of its history.
So in lieu of an actual position, a booming voice from the sky, a verse, any verse, about when life begins in the womb from Jesus — without any of that, preachers and evangelical charlatans made abortion a black/white issue, as though it was so obvious.
So, in a world of grey, this was the black/white that confused Christians could turn to.

"The world is falling apart around us, but we know that killing babies is wrong.” Done. End of story.
Now there is no work to be done, no grey areas to explore, no discomfort — a primary aspect of the Jesus movement IMO — to be dealt with.

It was just boiled down to one thing: abortion. Are you pro-life, or do you enjoy killing babies? That’s it.
It’s just so disgusting.

Pro-birth peoples don’t give two shits about babies. They just want them to be born, then fucking good luck, kid. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Quit whining.

Eroding reproductive rights is about one thing: controlling women’s bodies.
Now if evangelicals would just be honest and say they want to use their religious teachings and conservative power to control women’s bodies, then at least they wouldn’t be lying.
It’s still theological horseshit, and it’s steeped in white supremacy and hatred of the poor.

But here’s the point: they don’t care about babies — their health, their schooling, their poverty, their oppression based upon skin color.

They don’t care.
There is no one consistent Christian teaching about when life begins in the womb.

And it wasn’t important enough, apparently, for Jesus to talk about it at all.

It’s…just complicated.
And it’s okay not to know. It’s okay to live in the grey.

That’s where much more of our world lives. And we should get comfortable in the complexity.
