Hooray! There's a new $18.5 billion annual tax on American consumers, one that will increase over time! Even better, the stated reason is to coerce a foreign government into an impossible policy result, and the unstated reason is to distract racists from the President's crimes!
Oh wait, my bad, services are excluded, so it's merely a $17.3 billion annual tax on American consumers. You can avoid it by not buying any cars or trucks or fruits or vegetables or things built with machinery or using mineral fuels or optical and medical instruments. Simple.
Maybe if we're lucky Mexico will retaliate with its own tariffs, just like China! This is more *great* news for farmers and people who build machines or cars or things with plastic, those regular hard-working Americans that Trump is looking out for! 🌽👨‍🌾🇺🇸
Whatever, naysayer. It's fine if the entire infrastructure of the United States is more expensive to build and to maintain and if food and computers cost more, just so long as 34% of the country feels like we're sticking it to the Mexicans!
Yep. That's what China did -- targeted retaliatory tariffs at industries in Trump-supporting areas -- and Mexico could do the same. E.g., given their already vulnerable state, Mexico could nearly wipe out soybean and corn farmers by the 2020 election.
Ah, excellent, that's something U.S. businesses and consumers can totally plan around: a sudden $17.3 billion annual tax that might go up, might go down, and might disappear at any moment.
A 25% tariff on imports of goods from Mexico would be an $86.6 billion annual tax on consumers. In three months, it would collect $21.6 billion, more than the estate and gift taxes are projected to collect this whole year ($19 billion, per CBO).
