What's amazing to me is that these guys have a persecution complex even when they win. I mean, Kavanaugh is on the Supreme Court now but they think what happened to him was worse than the crucifixion.
This whole Catholic integralism debate makes me think that if the Democrats to win broadly in 2020 (say the presidency & Senate), the American right is going to go batshit crazy in a way that will make Trumpism seem like the essence of moderation & prudence.
The whole resurgence of Catholic integralism is another example of how William F. Buckley's fabled taming of the hard right was a temporary & incomplete phenomenon, often more a papering over of harsh disputes rather than a resolution of them.

1. So I have a few thoughts on H.G. Wells, Henry James, Hugh Kenner, Guy Davenport, National Review & how sci-fi & fantasy became the lingua franca of political discourse.
2. H.G. Wells & Henry James were friends once, even talked about collaborating on a novel about a voyage to Mars, but feuded. Their personal rift was emblematic of a larger split between genre & literary fiction.
3. The Wells/James rift was complicated but based on the two men deciding they didn't like each others approach to fiction: James seeing Wells as slapdash plotmonger & Wells concluding James was a effete wanker.

This isn't surprising to anyone who has paid attention to YouTube's growth strategy & lack of moral compass. But it's still shocking.
Milton Friedman famously argued in 1970 that “The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Its Profits” (the title of his article). In Friedman's terms, YouTube is being social responsible by allow Nazis & pedophiles to form communities on social media.
Let's take Friedman on his own terms & say that, given their mission to maximize profit, it's ethical for corporations to destroy the environment, spread Nazism & kiddie porn. In other words: business can have no real ethics, so the state has an obligation to regulate.

Obran's banning of gender studies & expulsion of Central European University has excited the right to think big: what if we get rid of the humanities altogether?
Conservatives: Political Correctness is destroying Western Civilization.
Also Conservatives: We'll push for the destruction of academic disciplines that are thousands of years old rather than risk one undergraduate reading Toni Morrison.
It's interesting to contemplate what would happen if the humanities were completely defunded (as some on the right want). A few canonical writers would continue to be read (Shakespeare, Austen & Dickens) but vast majority of classical canon (i.e. Horace or Pope) would disappear.

Two ground rules for understanding all this.

Rule 1: THERE IS NO DEFINITION OF GENDER IN UNITED STATES LAW. There is no one database everyone reads your gender from. Every part of the federal government, every state, every corporation has their own notion of "your gender".
This is normally very bad for trans people, because it means "fixing" one part of the federal government or one part of one state doesn't fix anything else. In this case it helps us, because *breaking* one thing doesn't *necessarily* break anything else.
