If someone says that the sun causes modern climate change, I'll point out how they are wrong. If someone says that the Arctic will warm 5-9C even if we stop emissions today, I'll also point out they are wrong. Saying I should give a free pass my "side" is deeply problematic.
I don't want to serve as the tone police for "overly strident rhetoric". But at the same time, when folks make prominent claims about what "science says" when its simply not the case, we have an obligation to speak out.

Electric vehicles are an important tool in decarbonizing transportation. However, despite the lack of tailpipes they are still far from zero-emissions. I dig into the details of the climate benefits and impacts of electric vehicles at Carbon Brief: carbonbrief.org/factcheck-how-… 1/6
The high-level takeaway: in virtually all cases EVs are better than a similarly-sized typical conventional vehicle. But they are not necessarily better than the most efficient hybrid or diesel vehicles in countries where lots of coal is used for electricity generation. 2/6

I'm increasingly seeing people justify climate policy choices by saying "science says". This is, more often than not, a misuse or misunderstanding of what scientists are actually saying. For example, the @ExtinctionR movement claiming science says we need zero emissions by 2025.
Scientists can examine a range of potential future emission scenarios using climate models. We can assess some future damages associated with these scenarios, though its generally economists and energy system modelers who focus on the mitigation cost and pathways.
So what does science actually tell us? It tells us that the more warming we have, the larger the impacts on society will be. Based on this political leaders have agreed to a target to limit warming to "well below" 2C, with an aspirational goal of holding it to 1.5C.

Today is apparently the day for climate scientists to give their hot takes on the eternal battle between renewable and nuclear advocates. Let me add my two cents: both are important, and we should align incentives to allow market mechanisms to drive cheap decarbonization. 1/5
New nuclear in US today is pretty much dead. The economics are abysmal, driven by huge cost overruns. But preventing existing nuclear power plants from shutting down (and largely being replaced by cheap gas) is a very cost-effective mitigation strategy carbonbrief.org/mapped-the-us-… 2/5
That said, the US is not the world. The economics of nuclear in places like South Korea and China doesn't seem too bad, and there they could play a large role in future decarbonization. 3/5

First, where did Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan plan come from? (George Soros, perhaps? Foreign-funded radicals?) No. It came from Albertans. A volunteer panel led by @andrew_leach spoke w 1K residents in-person and heard from 25K+ online. 2/24
The panel also engaged with 350+ stakeholders and met w Aboriginal Peoples in three cities, and received hundreds of detailed submissions from NGOs, industry groups and others. 3/24

One thing in the way of effective action on our #climate crisis (and our toxics crisis, our biodiversity crisis, our plastics in the ocean crisis, not to mention our violence, war, poverty, racism, & sexism crises) is a terrible misunderstanding of who/what we are.
Many people speak about this as a spiritual/moral crisis and I agree. But, the misunderstanding I want to talk about is at once simpler and more profound.
(Note - when I say 'we' I mean those of us acculturated into the western industrial growth mindset, which in evolutionarily relevant timescales has only been around for a fleeting instant. Humans haven't always thought this way, and not all humans alive today think this way.)

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level

Good questions @RedsforNamesake. If confronting #climate change is your priority, it is imperative to ramp up carbon-free energy asap.

1. NJ will now ramp up renewable energy from 13% in 2017 and 20% by 2020 under old RPS to 35% by 2025 & 50% by 2030. Impressive leadership.
2. To ensure that this new clean energy replaces fossil fuels and contributes to #climate mitigation goals, NJ's new laws also make payments to ensure the continued operation of 3 South Jersey nuclear reactors that currently supply 31% of the state's electricity consumption.
2. Cont.: That measure is essential and ensures that nearly all of the new clean energy growth over the next 12 years builds on top of the fossil-free foundation provided by the state's existing nuclear plants.
