It's fascinating that a by-election in which Labour's vote share dropped by 17.2% is being widely interpreted by the media as positive for them (aside from their MP winning, I mean) because the Tories set an even higher bar for mediocrity.
But "slightly less rubbish than the other lot" has never been a great look. So yes, it's good news they won the seat, no doubt about that. But more generally, it must surely be chilling that they shed so many voters?
After all, if those results tell us anything about a hypothetical GE, they suggest that Labour would "win" but need multiple other parties to prop it up and get over the majority line. In other words, a very weak, shaky position - much worse than the Tories are in now.
