Okay, woof. Just read this and really, where to start? How about with ‘I've been struggling with the problems that Hyde now presents,’ Biden said.” Let’s spend a second on the word “now,” Democratic front-runner. news.yahoo.com/joe-biden-reve…
Hyde has been keeping low income people from accessing abortions since 1976 when Biden voted for it with no exceptions. That’s how long—more than 40 years—this piece of cruel, punitive law has denied people the safe, legal healthcare they require, just because they are poor.
Please read this, about Rosie Jimenez, the first woman known to have died because of Hyde, in 1977, the year after Biden voted for it the first time and 42 years before he said you still supported it, which was two days ago: texasobserver.org/rosie-jimenez-…
Hyde does not “now” present a problem that it has not for all the years it’s been in place. Nb: The “problem” he’s been “struggling with” is being asked to reckon with decades’ worth of retrograde stances—on abortion, busing, criminal justice, welfare, war...
I welcome his evolution on these issues (Especially since there’s a good chance he gets nomination, but also in general—let’s be better, all of us!) But it’s hard to be persuaded of his sincerity when he opens with “I want to be clear: I make no apologies for my last position.”
Joe Biden: WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR YOU TO APOLOGIZE? Should the folks who’ve been denied healthcare and bodily autonomy, whose bodies and families have been imperiled and harmed by Hyde for the past four decades expect a phone call in 27 years like Anita Hill got?
Having it both ways—he was never wrong but bc of something changing (in the past 38 hours) & since he “believes health care is a right” he “can no longer support” Hyde—winds up being incoherent; it sounds like he doesn’t even know what this thing he supported till Tuesday does.
I don’t believe he doesn’t know what Hyde does. Rather, what he cannot & won’t acknowledge is how his decades of support for it put him in line with, & have helped to give cover to, lawmakers he’s just noticed are enacting other forms of restriction he claims to find appalling.
In conclusion: I cannot believe this guy’s organization is called It’s On Us when he cannot take responsibility for one goddamn thing he’s ever done wrong.
