WHEN THEY SEE US, @ava’s landmark miniseries about the Central Park Five, has provoked calls for action. Some efforts have been directed at Linda Fairstein, the story’s most obvious flesh-and-blood villain. But I wrote about why the best revenge is reform. rol.st/2QYD1Wf
Linda Fairstein has her reckoning coming. But as @rashadrobinson told me, “There is a Linda Fairstein in every city. The public must expose them, and hold them accountable for their actions as pawns in this unjust system.” Read my latest in @RollingStone. rol.st/2QYD1Wf
Kalief Browder and the Central Park Five are intertwined. I wrote this because I couldn’t stop thinking of Browder as I watched the ordeal of Korey Wise in the fourth act of @ava’s film. 88% of the people on Rikers Island are black or Latinx. That’s today. rol.st/2QYD1Wf
I’ll have more to say about all this later, but for now I’ll just reiterate what I wrote in the piece: “canceling” Linda Fairstein is all well and good, and deserved. But it won’t keep another black or brown boy from ending up like Antron, Raymond, Kevin, Yusef, Korey—or Kalief.
