Unless and until those in positions of power recognize that talent and ability can look different from themselves, we can't expect much to change in terms of who gets the opportunities to shine. insidehighered.com/blogs/just-vis…
Every since Jeffrey Goldberg's remark, I've been seeing the same pattern everywhere. This morning a thread (which I can't find) on gifted & talented education were black students were saying that to succeed they were explicitly instructed to turn their backs on their culture.
In that thread the white majority standard was accepted as the standard for gifted & talented and the back students who were allowed in were viewed as being "rescued." It's both utterly messed up and pervasive in all our systems. Once you see it in one place, it's everywhere.
Goldberg's frame of needing to plug the leaky pipeline to identify more diverse talent is fundamentally flawed. The pipeline isn't leaky; it's too narrow. As long as talent is required to perform for the Jeffrey Goldberg's of the world, nothing is going to change.
Need we pile on the ignominy of the week and remind the world that this is the guy who thought a right wing troll with an itchy thesaurus finger was a talent worthy hiring away from his native publication.
