I think any writer would really enjoy this The Art of the Process podcast interview with @emilynussbaum. Really resonates with me the way she demystifies both the writing process and the larger writer's journey and career. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ep-…
I'm never going to win a Pulitzer or have a New Yorker byline, but the work of writing is the work of writing, no matter what heights one has scaled professionally. It's reassuring to see someone so accomplished who is engaged with the struggle.
Towards the end @tedleo @aimeemann and @emilynussbaum talk about "faith through experience" that you're going to solve the problem with the piece based on having solved it previously. As a writing teacher, I think this is the most important experience we can give students.
As they talk in the podcast, there's multiple dimensions to this. One is that experience allows for the development of specific techniques to solve the problem. Another is that self-belief can help push through doubt, and doubt it inevitable with writing.
Students get so little practice at developing these competencies with so much of the writing they're asked to do in school. It's a scandal. That knowledge of the self at work (metacognition) is invaluable in terms of not just developing writing skills, but other traits as well.
