Every dataset I've looked at (see here for the ACS ) shows the same thing: some immigrant groups flourish (on average) across generations, others do not flourish (relatively speaking) in any generation.
But because merit-based immigration regimes are racist (and/or 'eugenic-adjacent'), we have no choice but privilege family ties.
If you take social identity theory seriously, such also inadvertently fuels grievance politics. Because people will inevitably make social comparisons. And if they see that their identity groups are worse off than others, they will protest.
