V odd this “race to be PM” from afar - tax plans that won’t pass this Parliament, Brexit “plans” that won’t pass Parliament, promise not to have GE - promises being made to tiny selectorate that aren’t in hands of winner to deliver...

NEW: Sounds like a rather interesting call between PM Johnson and the Taoiseach... the latter ‘emphasised’ backstop “necessary as a consequence of decisions taken in the UK and by the UK government”, acc to Irish readout..
.. also the Taoiseach explained the EU was united in its view that Withdrawal Agreement could not be reopened” thus far re Alternative Arrangements “satisfactory options have yet to be identified and demonstrated”
And said Varadkar “restated the need for both governments to be fully committed to the Good Friday Agreement, the protection of the Peace Process and restoration of institutions” and “recalled the Agreement requires sov Govt to exercise power with rigorous impartiality”

Today PM reiterated: a million to one “exactly where I would put the odds” of No Deal, & “absolutely not” working assumption, as Cab minister in charge suggested in writing yday.
meanwhile PMOS said he’d meet EU leaders when backstop position changes, and no contact with Varadkar
Game Theory argument for this approach - and El Erian below explains why it might work...

1. Commit credibly to No Deal - thru Cabinet appointments, spending
2. Try to isolate Dublin. Force its choice btwn backstop and November No Deal
3. Do better deal.

... but in order to send credible message on No Deal, PM needs to ramp up expectations of it, not play down.

This is because tens of thousands of small biz have not even taken most basic step in customs preparation because its a waste of working capital if No Deal not happening

Lady Manningham Buller told the BBC that Wellcome’s billion pound a year funding for science in the UK reflected fact UK already “a science superpower” but “anxious” that status “on the wane” from “rupture” with European collaboration. Said funding & immigration policy vital...
She also said there were some post Brexit opportunities to shape global regulation of new technologies such as Artifical Inteligence and genomic medicine... but she pointed out the 50 per cent fall in apps from EU to study at Sanger Institute in Cambridge

So understand that, as I think @Mij_Europe first mentioned, the focus of meetings is on examining texts that might "entrench" whatever promises Labour get from Tories in this negotiation - and the current focus of this is in text of Withdrawal Agreement Bill. /2
@Mij_Europe It goes without saying that all this is moot if Tories and Labour cannot agree a deal. And with Labour digging in on Second Referendum requirement and Tories spooked by Brexit Party and prospects of customs union deal...it's hard (to put it kindly) to see how a deal happens/3

So in a #Brexit nutshell.

The 230 vote defeat confronts us with the fact that the problem is bigger than the backstop or time-limits.

It is a brutal rejection of May's strategy of obfuscation.

As @MichelBarnier has said this morning, the deal he brokered was a function of UK red lines - the consequences of which May never confronted.

All that nonsense about "frictionless trade" outside the Customs Union and Single Market.

Those lines surely now need to change. /2
@MichelBarnier Brexiteers were happy to hold May to account on the half of those promises the likes (on trade independence and frictionlessness) but never accept that the consequence when pointed out by the other side.

Now Parliament looks set to bring that game to a halt/3

1) So what is the Labour #Brexit GE platform?

As far as we can make out we'd be voting for more negotiations (which the EU will not agree to) to get a better deal (which likely doesn't exist)

The entire Labour platform is based on promising a Brexit they cannot deliver
2) "Vote Labour even though our #Brexit platform depends on 27 other governments all doing what they've all said they absolutely won't do"

That's not a manifesto, it's just wishful thinking
3) but even if Labour's GE promises on Brexit were real, why should any Remainer support a GE?

The Tories have led Brexit but at least they are starting to say it may not happen. Corbyn's leadership team won't even consider the idea that Brexit could be stopped

Saddened but not surprised by this reversal by Labour Leadership.

Labour members overwhelmingly support a People's vote, and they have been comprehensively overridden

2) so, full disclosure, I'm not a Corbyn fan but I was absolutely prepared to "lay down arms" if something approaching a pro people's vote motion came out of last night's horsetrading. It didn't. A fudge came out, and that fudge was hardened into a pro brexit position
3) so what happened, and what does it mean? Quick summary
Well, clearly there is a growing pro remain/people's vote position in Labour - 9 out of 10 members support it & 150 CLPs sent in pro vote motions.

That's a staggering number and shows the concern of members

Jaguar Land Rover recently agreed 2 build a new plant in Slovakia with EU grant, owned by Tata, same company who trashed our steel industry & emptied workers pension funds.

British Army's new Ajax fighting vehicles to be built in SPAIN using SWEDISH steel at the request of the EU to support jobs in Spain with EU grant, rather than Wales.

Dyson gone 2 Malaysia, with EU loan. Crown Closures, Bournemouth (Was METAL BOX), gone 2Poland with EU grant,employed 1,200.
M&S manufacturing gone 2far east with EU loan.
