100 years ago today, the Wisconsin state legislature voted to ratify the 19th Amendment to the Constitution—making Wisconsin the first state to ratify women’s suffrage. Today, we celebrate, and affirm our resolve to continue the work.
On the floor beneath the Capitol dome here, there’s now a great display about the history of the women’s suffrage movement—a movement wracked by racism and classism that nonetheless broke ground on mass movement organizing and achieved profound victories. Vital history.
At a moment when the right to vote and the rights of women are under relentless attack—including the rights of women to vote, especially black and brown women—it’s worth celebrating those who fought and sacrificed to expand the franchise.
There are few tactics activists use today that weren’t deployed, and often pioneered, by women’s suffrage activists. Let’s learn from them, honor them, and carry the torch aloft today.
