1/8 Some thoughts about today's plastics announcement from Trudeau.

First - Plastic litter is the among worst kinds of litter. It ruins our parks & pollutes our lakes, rivers and oceans. So a mature, balanced approach to reducing plastic should earn support across party lines
2/8 In fact it's worth noting the Trudeau Liberals are late to the party when it comes to plastics

Under the leadership of @fordnation and @RodPhillips01, the Ontario PC Government's environment plant includes serious measures to "reduce plastic waste"

3/8 Of course, when we launched our plan, the Ford PCs were attacked for daring to mention litter policies (like reducing plastic waste) at all!

Message at the time was clear, any environment policy that distracted from elite/progressive fetish for carbon taxes was to be mocked
4/8 Please note how those same snide, mocking voices are absent following Trudeau's announcement he is following Ontario's lead in taking plastics seriously

The willingness of activists to rent out their integrity in the service of the Liberal Party cannot be understated.
5/8 Even so, we should acknowledge that the Trudeau plastic announcement, represents progress. It's the first time in a long time that the Trudeau Liberals have invested political capital in any environmental priority other than trying to trick Canadians into paying a carbon tax.
6/8 Of course, devil is in the details. There's a responsible, pragmatic way to reduce single-use plastics with minimal increased consumer costs & inconvenience. As a first step, @cathmckenna could reach out to @RodPhillips01 & ask what she can do to support Ontario's litter plan
7/8 But a reasonable, non-partisan, and mature approach will not excite twitter activists, win applause applause at international gals or earn you selfies with celebrities.

And this...to be charitable...is not the Trudeau way.

But the opportunity still exists all the same
8/8 Still broadening the environmental discourse is welcome. Climate change is an urgent & serious issue. But it's not the only issue. Just as a carbon tax isn't only way to fight climate change, cheerleading for carbon taxes isn't only way to prove you care about the environment
