If I were Hunt - or anyone else wanted to clip Johnson's wings - I'd be quietly encouraging such discussion. But I'd probably be making a mistake

1/
It poses Johnson a dilemma: either he wasn't that confident he could beat any challenger, or he is slipped the kool-aid about how strong is he and so won't listen to anyone once in No.10

2/
The aim isn't to prove such gaming occurred but to suggest it's the kind of thing Johnson would do: a harbinger of What Is To Come

3/
Given how far Hunt was behind in the MP voting, and the likely mountain to climb with party members, this might be the most productive line: "can you trust this man?"

4/
Of course, danger is that members see all this as mark of Johnson's lack of ruth, the kind of determination he'd bring to policy work/WA renegotiation/etc.

5/
Moreover, most people have already made up their mind on what they think about Johnson, so scope for shifting views is limited

6/
So, well be hearing more about this, but probably to no great effect
