Jeremy Hunt defends comparing the EU to the Soviet Union. Incredible.
On narrow point of fact: simply not correct the EU is making it impossible for the UK to leave. Some days, some EU diplomats wd be glad if UK got on and did actually leave.
I know this is a leadership contest, but way too much stress on personality to fix Brexit.

The EU is a system of laws. It's not going to tear them all up because next PM is "tougher" or "not going to blink" whatever that means.

So gov has a plan for next 95 days. And after that? If no-deal, EU will have conditions for opening talks: agreeing Irish border, money and citizens’ rights.
Scorched earth = harder to pick up pieces on future talks.
Picking up pieces on citizens’ rights will be especially complicated without legal frame of article 50.
Citizens’ rights will be especially complicated without article 50 frame. Replacement deal will have different legal base, requiring ratification national parliaments. Many no-deal plans in place now, but do not = current WA. So 5m people in limbo.

@V_Andriukaitis Jeremy Hunt never responded to Andriukaitis's offer to discuss the Soviet Union, after Hunt compared EU to USSR.

The commissioner was born in one of Stalin's gulags, because his parents were considered "enemies of the people".
@V_Andriukaitis Politicians such as Boris Johnson are undermining a functioning democracy, he suggests, with "cheap promises, simplified visions, blatantly evident incorrect statements".

Meanwhile... Michel Barnier met Stephen Barclay yesterday and once again rejected the British gov request to ringfence citizens' rights part of the Brexit agreement.

The EU remains absolutely firm that it will not reopen the withdrawal agreement.
The British government hopes to convince the EU to change its mind, by stressing no-deal impact, esp on Ireland.

“I think a no-deal outcome would be very damaging for Ireland,”

@joncstone While Johnson and Hunt are arguing about whether optimism v entrepreneurship will win the day, the EU refers back to the legal text that the British gov has already agreed to.

The extension deal from April *rules out* further negotiations.

It had always been government’s belief that if it cld speak to the Member States rather than the Commission it wld get a better #Brexit deal. The UK, they thought, could divide & rule. Jeremy Hunt’s comments have put an end to that. #Brexit
Comparing the #EU to the Soviet Union is the latest easily avoidable diplomatic error made by a cabinet minister. Hunt’s comments have lead to countries that used to be the UK’s best friends in the Council (like Estonia & Latvia) openly stating that he has insulted them. #Brexit
If the UK was to successfully divide & rule, it needed to keep its friends close. What it is doing is pushing them away. #Brexit

This is gonna be long, but I think it's worth it. A well-regarded twitter poster, let’s call him Giorgio, has recently publish a thread stating among other things as follows. “The pathways to stopping or delaying Brexit are blocked.
But once the mandate is discharged, the pathways to UK rejoining, or being in a close association agreement with EU, within the single market and customs union, will be open, with no obstacles.”
This approach annoys me for two reasons, one because Giorgio seems to be attempting to cajole Remainers to put all activity on hold until we actually leave the #EU.
