'Sexual liberation and political tyranny are ontologically coupled', says Robert Jenson. Here's why (thread):
'there is in fact a casual connection between sexual disorder and general civil and political disorder...'
Because 'there is one and only one place where the synchronic and diachronic dimensions of community intersect: the heterosexually based family...
'by union of bodies as which persons are present to one another, and from which union the next generation derives...
'only a society that dualistically thinks of the body as one thing and the person who "has" that body as another thing can overlook that fact...
A society that displaces sexuality from its place in this structure, that does not by law and custom hold its core community together, will lack intrinsic coherence and over time will be able to hold itself together only by force;
'... sexual liberation and political tyranny are ontologically coupled. ' Commentary on Ezekiel 23:46-49
In other words, a society which destroys marriage must end up totalitarian. Only in a society which honours and privileges marriage can community cohesion sustain itself.
'It is a grimly laughable delusion to suppose that society and polity have no stake in what people do "in the privacy of their bedrooms"; there is nothing else in which the public has so primary an interest.'
