Opposing federally mandated busing to integrate schools is a very strange policy position in 2019
This is a Democratic primary debate and the leading candidate is saying that we should have been more sensitive to states rights during the civil rights movement

Is this real life?
Most people don't watch these debates. They will see one or two clips. That exchange between Biden and Harris on race is the moment of this debate.

1. The infighting in the Democratic Party right now can all be traced back to the decision NOT to impeach Trump

Why aren't Democrats unified and focused on opposing Trump?

Because Democratic leadership decided opposing Trump shouldn't be the focus of this Congress
2. If the House was impeaching Trump right now, the focus would be on Trump and his crimes, not tactical differences among Democrats

Also, impeachment is the biggest tactical disagreement in the party now. If leadership endorsed impeachment, there would be much less daylight
3. The decision from House leadership to protect Trump from impeachment (and, in a related move, not use all the tools available to get Trump's tax returns) is mystifying

I'm surprised it hasn't generated more public criticism from within the Party

1. OK, I admit it.

I think it's fine that Democrats are fighting with each other.

Let me explain.
2. There is a big debate about the future of the Democratic Party.

Does the party need to represent a "return to normalcy" after Trump?

Or should it advocate for bold positions about the nation's biggest problems: health care, climate, wage stagnation?
3. The idea that everyone should pretend there is no such agreement within the party and no Democrat should criticize another Democrat seems pointless.

It's better in my view to hash it out.

Raised her hand when asked if she’d eliminate private insurance, then backtracked.

Attacked Joe Biden over federally mandated school busing, then backtracked.
The thing that gets to me is that almost all of the other major candidates really do seem to have serious principles (even Biden, though I think his are fsir game for criticism)...

Biden's claim tonight that he only opposed federally mandated busing and did not generally oppose "busing in America" was a flagrant misrepresentation of his position in the '70s and '80s. He'd made crystal clear he opposed busing as a concept, as a matter of principle.
Biden's remarks on busing in the 1970s were generally very unequivocal -- "I oppose busing. It's an asinine concept." "A bankrupt concept." "Busing does not work." He expressed pride for making anti-busing sentiment "respectable" among liberals.
As recently re-reported by WaPo, Biden said things like this about busing: “What it says is, ‘In order for your child with curly black hair, brown eyes, and dark skin to be able to learn anything, he needs to sit next to my blond-haired, blue-eyed son.’ That’s racist!"
