1/ #Somaliland took a different path regarding reconciliation and peace building. There are many factors that was critical for Somaliland’s approach to succeed in the after math of 1991 regime fall. The two most important factors are a less complicated clan poltics mechanism
2/ The other factor was leadership quality. As the political leadership of #SNM was able to neutralise the military leadership and restrain it self from acts of retaliation against members and supports of Siad Barres regime. Contrary to what happened in the south.
3/Fast forward to the current regime in #Somaliland. Muse Bihi is a prominent mility leader, and the quick collaps of the state of freedom, minority rights and human rights in #Hargeysa speaks of its self.
4/Now, when it comes to recognition. I think that the current regime in #Somaliland isnt the one that could facilitate the conditions in which a recognition will be achieved. Nor are the very basics that the so called democracy in #Somaliland is functioning.
4/The democracy in Somalilnd is reserved to ONE major player, while everybody els is neglected, and no guarantee for minority veto or what so ever. Its a basically one democracy for one clan & citizens that are more “valued” than other citizens.
5/In my opinion, I think that #Somalia should be open for the idea of recognizing #Somaliland through negotiations. The topic of the negotiations should be centred on multiple axes; the right of the minorities in the future state;
6/ the guarantee of the #Somalia interests in sea/air passages & movement of citizens and economic matters like fishery, trade. Above, a public referendum where the outcome should be based on outcomes on regional level, not #Somaliland as a whole!
