The current fleet of coal power plants could emit 242GtCO₂ (44 year lifetime), & the much hailed Powering Past Coal Alliance may reduce that by 1.6CO₂ (0.66% & dotted line).

Countries join up to PPCA when they were going to retire coal anyway...

Most PPCA members have pledged to retire coal plants when their average age approaches the average lifetime of the coal plants & that these pledges are in line with recent trends.

Many PPCA members have no or little coal power or intended to retire before PPCA.

No pain!

What is special about PPCA members (red)?

a) Low share of coal
b) Little coal production
c) Don't import much coal
d) Old coal fleets
e) Low energy demand
f) Low air pollution
g) Rich
h) Strong governance

ie, not China & India where most coal power sits today!

The PPCA pledges would lead to premature retirement of 46% of coal power plants in member countries or 2% of global coal power capacity.

This pales in comparison to what is needed for 1.5°C or 2°C (the small blue & green bars).

This paper is a nice complement to the other paper on fossil fuel infrastructure released yesterday, this figure showing how old the coal fleet (right) is in developed countries & young it is in developing countries...

Coal power generation is declining in OECD countries, but rising in non-OECD. This maps directly to the findings in the two papers on fossil fuel infrastructure & PPCA, & age distributions of coal fleets.

This is the biggest climate policy challenge agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

I don't have anything against @PastCoal. I do have issues with countries getting a free ride by pretending to do a lot, while doing nothing.

My other hobby horse is the claims that Norway is a climate leader when its GHG emissions are still rising & pledges are meaningless.

Come to think of it, Norway does have a small slither of coal power, in Svalbard. Yes, that Arctic island that is melting under climate change theguardian.com/environment/ng…

Why doesn't Norway pledge to get rid of that small bit of coal? Oh, because it is a political hot potato...

Make sure to read @jessicadjewell's thread on her paper, as she explains it much better than me!
