Aviation sure gets people fired up!

Aviation is 3% of global emissions (yes, higher for some countries & individuals), but I get fired up about 100% of global emissions, 97% of which are not aviation.

Here comes a mini-thread on some numbers.

1/
First, aviation has some accounting problems. International aviation is not allocated to countries (~2%, brown in previous tweet), but domestic aviation is (~1%, orange). It is hard to find data & methods on how much international aviation should be allocated to countries.

2/
Second, aviation has extreme inequality. Just one international flight, or several domestic flights, could completely dominate the annual carbon footprint of an individual. From my previous thread, only 3% of people flew in 2017 (globally)

3/
Third, the climate does not care where emissions come from, nor that one period has higher aviation emissions than another. Therefore we should reduce emissions in all sectors, and eventually to zero (if not some CO₂ removal is needed)

4/
Fourth, aviation is growing & technological options are harder, & that alone may warrant closer scrutiny of the sector, as could the large inequalities (already mentioned).

5/
Let's look at some numbers.

Most emissions are from non-transport (grey), & road completely dominates (green). Even in many rich markets, road is growing slowly (linked to oil price & GDP).

Rich countries will get a larger share of international transport (not shown).

6/
In developing countries, transport is smaller. Most absolute growth is in road transport. Aviation may be growing really fast relatively, but the absolute level is still relatively low.

7/
A special Nordic tweet, Sweden vs Norway. Norway has much higher emissions from domestic aviation, much higher emissions from boats! The dip in Norwegian road at the end is biofuels (palm-oil), not electric cars.

8/
I know people have strong views on why we should put extra effort on aviation, no need to tell me again, but at least, can you ponder on the size of aviation in respect to other sectors. Feel free to ignore.
