ACLU urges federal judge to stop the Trump administration from taking any further action to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, arguing it is estopped by its own June 30 deadline: aclu.org/legal-document…
The Justice Department repeatedly told the courts it had to finalize the census forms by June 30, and used that deadline to leapfrog over the court of appeals to SCOTUS. Now the ACLU wants to the courts to hold the administration to its word.
This filing recounts the many times the Justice Department told the Supreme Court it HAD to finalize the census by June 30. It's pretty damning.
What's incredible damning here is that the Justice Department used its June 30 deadline *to obtain expedited Supreme Court review,* an extremely rare gift. Now it has entirely reversed course, disclaiming any sense of urgency. Did the DOJ simply lie to SCOTUS?
