1) When there is asymmetric "power" in negotiations, the party that the deck is stacked against still has the option to hold on to "no". Remember, often *no deal* is preferable to a bad deal...in politics of business.
2) It always amuses me when the other side of the negotiating table starts telling me *how good the deal is for me*. Think about how ignorant it is for the opposite side to know what is in your best interests more than you do.
3) Amateur negotiators do not have the patience to let the other side decide what is in their best interest. A heuristic- "When you get someone who benefits from the advice they give you, not just reject that advice but become intransigent."
4) Never believe that the buyer or one that believes they have the upper hand must always be the winner at your expense. Saying *no* is important as well as developing additional options. The latter takes cleverness.
5) This works with political negotiations. Think of US and Iran and asymmetric power... Iranians are much better at this game than the US even with fewer cards. Afghans too... Power is vastly overrated (Sit down with a Private Equity turd and you will discover this).
