OMG so much agonizing on some discussion lists about "anyone use ACTUAL medieval style spindles? How can I find a reputable company on Etsy who makes them?"

I mean, SERIOUSLY, what does that person think a medieval style spindle IS?!?? Like, let's unpack this: (a) Where, geographically? (b) In which year? (c) For which social/financial class? (d) Lead whorl? Clay? Carved wood? Stone?

At a birthday party on Saturday, I was spinning on a drop spindle (as I do, in public, with downtime to fill). Two obviously clueless types sat down with wide-eyes, starting with the "what are you DOING??!" and so I started slowly, because I had a feeling ...
...I had a feeling they weren't a receptive audience. I was right. Woman A was captivated with, "It's like cotton candy!" repeated ad nauseum, for my wool/silk/bamboo blend. She continually exclaimed, "No one ever does this anymore, anywhere!"

There was this tweet from @GreatGameIndia about tests done on samples of table and cooking salt from 2 Indian companies / brands - Tata Salt and Sambhar Salt. Apparently they contained 'high' levels of Potassium Ferrocyanide. (#OMG, ferrocyanide? why arent we all dying?!!?)
The report in GGINews, an online newspaper, quoted a certain Shiv Shankar Gupta, Chairman of Godhum Grains & Farms Products, that the test by America West Analytical Laboratories (AWAL) showed 4.71 mg/kg in Sambhar Salt and 1.85 mg/kg in Tata's product.
Apparently the story was picked up by IANS and carried by several outlets. I saw it retweeted by @PragyaTiwari I had previously received a #WhatsApp forward in family group rife with fake news.
I smelled something fake about it and decided to look into it.

I hear fairly often how distant #medieval history is from the modern world, how irrelevant our work is, how it's a niche to only talk about dead white people with no connection to now.

And I get that. I do. I have read those books and taken those classes. But.
None of us emerged as medievalists in a vacuum. Ask people on #medievaltwitter how they became a medievalist and all of the reasons are a connection moderated through something or someone else. Those texts, sites, ideologies, people are all present concerns.
We may delve into archives to look at primary documents about people long-dead in Europe, or even about Europe, but what we do with those archives, how those archives came to be, how and why those documents survive, are modern history.

Sometimes, when working with manuscripts we get really, really close to people from the past. This is a story of a letter from a schoolgirl to her teacher, written probably sometime in the last three decades of the 9th century. A thread #medieval #manuscripts /1
The manuscript in question, Düsseldorf B.3 is a collection of texts, written probably around 820 in Corbie in Northern France. It contains a number of works, ranging from Alcuin through Bede to hymns. It was perfect for school use. /2
