Health industry CEOs took home a whopping $2.6 BILLION in compensation last year. That's $2.6B that could have, and should have, been spent on patient care. Private health insurers are especially egregious since their profits come from *denying* health care.
Pharmaceutical price gouging bankrupts patients and makes lifesaving medications unaffordable for many. But CEOs and investors sure are happy about those relentless price hikes.
The opportunities for #BigPharma profiteering are so vast that contractors, distributors, and pharmacies are making money hand over fist...all to the detriment of patients.
Medical equipment manufacturers continue to take home billions as hospitals and clinics make purchases based on the potential for profit, rather than community medical need.
Have you ever gotten a large, unexpected bill from a laboratory? Maybe one that was "out of network?" Those fees add up...and end up in the pockets of yet another category of health care profiteer.
For-profit providers have a financial incentive to cut corners. No wonder they deliver inferior quality care at a higher cost than their nonprofit counterparts. For the sake of patients, all large medical providers in the U.S. should be converted to nonprofit status.
These are the industries that are fighting to derail #MedicareForAll through the well-funded @P4AHCF (of which the @AmerMedicalAssn is shamefully a part). Their profits depend on killing #SinglePayer reform.
But the status quo isn't working, so Americans are demanding *real* change. Not a public option. Not minor "fixes" to the ACA. And certainly not health savings accounts. But a comprehensive #SinglePayer program that covers EVERYBODY.
