They do have a theory that the popular mobilization that will be required to move off carbon requires a fundamentally different, social democratic economy. But there’s little to that argument beyond expressed theory, or perhaps more realistically an aspiration.
/ What you have in practice is something called the Green New Deal which is one part aggressive and necessarily pricey plan to decarbonize the economy and one part social democracy, or perhaps a slightly updated 21st version of the social democracy package.
/ Notably, the social democracy part is probably more expensive than the climate part even though real climate action will inevitably be super pricey. Obviously that part is well worth it to have a planet for our children to live on.
/ But it does seem like an inevitable bait and switch. Or rather an effort to take the climate crisis - which mobilizes the fact that every sensible person knows we need to move ASAP to prevent or mitigate catastrophic damage to the planet - and uses it as a package to slip ...
/ in social democracy, which not everybody agrees on. This way, if you’re not on board with the social democracy parts of the GND, you clearly want the planet to be incinerated.
/ I will say that there’s nothing wrong with combining the two. And I can’t prove the theory is wrong. Maybe if you dramatize ally change the economy and make it better for the poor and marginalized communities you build a robust coalition on the climate front.
/ But it wld be better or more honest to say we want to decarbonize the economy and create social democracy at the same time. And we think the latter will make the former possible. And I know some advocates will say, wait, that is what we’re saying! To which I wld ...
/ let’s do a poll, even among the very politically aware and ask if they’d be surprised to hear that most of the money for the Green New Deal has no connection to climate, carbon or the environment. I think most of us know the “surprised” number wld be quite high.
