I want to believe that #HandmaidsTale is building up to a commentary of race and privilege via June's ability to remain unscathed while women of colour suffer and die around her and often, because of her.
There's an interesting contrast in the way Ofmatthew/Natalie is treated by the other Handmaids for colluding with Aunt Lydia, and how Janine, a pet of Lydia's, is treated. Both are fragile. Ofmatthew is attacked and bullied, while Janine is treated with affection and kid gloves.
Is Ofmatthew the means by which the show tries to confront the racial issues that a society like Gilead would surely have? That women of colour will be treated kindly so long as they toe the line? If so, I would have liked to have seen more of her history. The actress was superb.
I really hope that the audience is being intentionally shown the callousness of June's white woman privilege; she is willing and able to let the women of colour around her suffer and die "for the greater good"; so long as she gets what she wants.
Certainly June is self righteous enough to believe her quest to regain her daughter (ironically a biracial child who will likely suffer the worst Gilead has to offer) is a pure and noble mission, more than worth the bodies piling up around her. Is this intentional?
If so, I beg the showrunners to reconsider their approach. By centring Gilead's misogynoir around the callous actions and motivations of the white June, we miss out. I want to know Natalie. They haven't properly touched on what might have driven her to complicity with Gilead.
But who knows? Will June be violently confronted with what she has done? After all, June is just as complicit in the atrocities of Gilead, more so than Ofmatthew, because she enables (even facilitates) the particular punishment of women of colour, as it suits her ends.
Also, give us more Moira. As much as I adore seeing Emily settle into her new life, the show didn't even give half the time to Moira's adjustment. More Moira. More Samira Wiley, please. Thank you!
