1/ Let’s not forgot that during the 1980’s the United States poured millions of dollars into supporting corrupt governments and brutal militaries in places like El Salvador, Honduras & Guatemala.
2/ Taking sides in these wars resulted in countless civilian deaths. When the wars were over, we turned our backs on these countries and didn’t help them deal with corruption or impunity or poverty or any of the systemic issues we created.
3/ Now we see what is happening as a result. Given our history, the United States has a moral obligation to lead an effort with the international community to help these countries rebuild and help those who are seeking asylum.
4/ Not only is it the right thing to do, but it will help address the violence that causes families to flee in the first place.
