I see John #McDonnell in Sunday Times repeating claim that #renationalisation of water etc will have no net cost because gov't will be acquiring an asset to offset increase in debt. This isn't completely daft, but (you knew they'd be a but)... (1/2)
... it assumes i) renationalised assets keep their value (would they, if water is run by the GMB?), and ii) there is no other collateral damage (John McDonnell's plan to pay far less than market value would hit investor confidence hard). (2/2)

FWIW, here are my subjective rankings of the #ToryLeadershipContest #tax cut proposals. (This is a personal view only - I don’t have a dog, or even a vote, in this fight.) In reverse order… (1/6)
No. 5 (i.e. last). Reform #VAT and replace with a sales tax (#Gove). Bad economics. VAT is a relatively efficient tax and the current system already allows the UK gov’t to set lower rates for some goods and services to help the poor. #Brexit will increase this flexibility. (2/6)
No. 4. Raise the threshold for paying the top rate of income tax (#Johnson). Neither one thing nor the other? Won’t actually make much difference to those earning just above the old threshold, or any difference to those who earn a lot less. (3/6)

A lot of guff today (only a little of it from Boris!) on the £39bn #Brexit ‘divorce bill’ which the UK is expected to pay as part of May's deal. The key point is that the £39bn is meant to honour commitments *already made* during the period of the UK’s membership... (1/8)
It is therefore simply wrong for #Remainers to claim that the £39bn is a ‘cost’ of Brexit that we could avoid by staying in (and that it should have been on the side of a bus too). In reality, the £39bn is money the UK would have had to pay anyway, even if still a member… (2/8)
However, it would also be wrong to assume that we would save the whole £39bn by leaving with #nodeal. I’m well aware that many experts (including a HoL committee) have argued that the UK would be on strong *legal* ground if we decided to walk away without paying a penny… (3/8)

According to the ONS, the #GenderPayGap has continued to fall this year and is now at a record low. Despite this, '#EqualPayDay 2018’ has remained at 10th November - the same date as each of the past two years. That’s the first clue there's something fishy here... (1/5)
This is because, instead of comparing median wages (the number in the middle), the Fawcett Society uses the mean (the average of all the data). This has the effect of giving more weight to the incomes of a relatively small number of high earners at the top of companies... (2/5).
That might be OK if you want to focus (say) on CEO salaries and the underrepresention of women on boards. But it is unrepresentative of the rest of the workforce, where the #GenderPayGap has already narrowed significantly, especially for women under 39 (3/5)

The problem for @UKLabour hasn't changed much. The structure of its vote is breaking apart, and has been for a long time. As we wrote in 'Revolt On the Left' in 2014, the party continues to lose it's working class base. 1/
At the same time the party has gained younger, better-educated metropolitans. Since 2015 really but accelerated recently. The problem is this: The votes it has lost aren't coming back, whilst the voters it has gained aren't tribally loyal to ANY party. 2/
Meaning the two coalitions forming around Brexit in Labour are essentially trying to meet both needs: win back the lost voters AND keep the one's they've gained. The party has now reached close to it's absolute base (I have that at 28% nationally). 3/

One of the techniques that makes discussing gender variance in children so difficult is a rhetorical device where the word "child" is left deliberately undefined and torquing the ensuing vagueness to spark a moral panic.

Something that's at this point uncontroversial among clinicians and researchers of gender variance in children is the importance of Tanner Stage 2 in distinguishing different sets of needs.

The Wikipedia post basically outlines the issues as a failure in the fabric of the road due to moisture beneath the road surface & fatigue from vehicle load.

The article points more at snow as being the moisture enabling culprit but we obviously don't have snow in these parts.
'Snow' may therefore be substituted for another firm of precipitation - rain (and subsequently water).
