I'm free 1030am-12pm & 3pm-430pm tomorrow & am thinking of doing six 30-min office hours-style mtgs in SF (Jackson Square). Reply/DM me if interested! I can do pitch feedback, chat about fundraising strategy, etc.

My focus areas: seed stage ($1.5m-$4m rounds), b2b, post-launch.

3/ IMO this is why startups can succeed against all odds: founders are consumed by their missions, and for every resource and technique they find, they ask "can this help me achieve my goal?" That kind of single-minded dedication is very effective & very hard to compete against.

1/ Founders often ask me how to present a competitive landscape in their pitch deck. My framework is to use a four-quadrant matrix where each of the two axes are dimensions that are key to winning in your market.
2/ Examples of good axes to use are:
- types of scaling strategies (manual vs automated, geo by geo vs nationwide, etc)
- target customer segment (consumer vs SMB vs enterprise)
- customer needs (price, speed, customizability, privacy, etc).
3/ Ideally your company stands out from all of the competitors in your matrix. For example all of your competitors do something manually, but you do it automatically. Or all of them are focused on enterprise, but you cater to SMBs.

1/ I couldn't be more excited to announce @SusaVentures Fund III. The customary thing to say is that fundraising isn't a true milestone and that we're going to get back to work. I'm going to momentarity ignore that custom. It's okay to celebrate things :).
2/ Some history: we started @SusaVentures in 2013. We were a team of friends that hadn't directly worked together and hadn't worked in venture capital. We began investing as an angel group, loved working w/each other and w/amazing founders, and decided to formally start a fund.
3/ Our first fund was a slog both to raise and to invest. Fundraising took almost a year and many, many meetings, and getting on founders' and co-investors' radars was very hard because we were relatively unknown and didn't have a track record.

Although I did very well in the end, I had a very rough start. I was convinced my admission was a mistake.

The culture was completely foreign to me & I didn’t begin to know how to navigate it. My parents had attended a very small, not selective LA school - not much help there./
I remember being overwhelmed by the level & speed of my classes and marveled at the other freshman who seemed to learn so much faster than I could - I later learned many had already taken the classes in private HS & but retook then to boost their GPA. 3/

A big theme in my speeches across Western US is the formative impact that Irish people & those of Irish descent have had in shaping modern day Western US. This is very true in #SanFrancisco where there is huge Irish heritage & where we have a vibrant @GlobalIrish community today!
Around 11% of the Bay Area is of Irish descent & there is a large Irish born community too. The people to people connections between the region & Ireland are very strong as evidenced by multiple sister city connections: @sfgov & @corkcitycouncil; @CityofSanJose & @DubCityCouncil
@SantaClaraCity & @LimerickCouncil are sister cities, as are @CityofMenloPark & @GalwayCityCo! Quick shout out to Kathy Watanabe @Carunningmom, the Vice Mayor of Santa Clara with proud #Roscommon heritage. Here’s me meeting with Mayor @LisaGillmor & Kathy earlier this year.

We have a solution, one of many in the world that could help provide some answers to some problems. Please show me where I said this. I've never said I approved of filtering because I don't believe it can work.

I support the idea that we need to force change in the status quo or the current monopolies will further cinch up all access to media. I personally think it's horrible that smaller developers cannot access media.
