Hillary Clinton made this same argument in 2016, particularly after the Access Hollywood tape. And people did choose, even though on judges, tax cuts & deregulation, other than his obsession with tariffs, Trump is no different from any other Republican. Yet they wanted him. Why?
Jeb or Rubio or Cruz would have shoveled tax cuts at the rich, let polluters wreck the earth, tried to take healthcare away and nominated Gorsuch and Kavanaugh too. So why did Republicans prefer Trump? It was his vicious language on immigration. That's what made him different.
That's what Republicans have to face: that the very things about Trump that embarrass and appall them (privately) while they'd prefer to gwok up tax cut loot and kill rivers and pad insurance company profits in peace are precisely why his -- THEIR -- base love him.
I mean there really is no way around it. Is the Trump economy better than Obama's? Nope. realclearpolitics.com/articles/2019/…
Even those inclined to like Trump's economic policies (because besides tariffs, they are standard GOP (tax cuts for the rich, cutting services for old and poor people and letting polluting industries kill the planet) don't think the Trump economy is better cnbc.com/2019/06/20/the…
So it's "that other thing." Republicans should take a hard look, for sure, but at that.
