Sound Transit’s Link light rail system opened 10 years ago today, carrying riders from Westlake Center to Tukwila.

On July 18, 2009, the 14-mile, $2.3 billion route from Westlake Center to Tukwila opened. An estimated 45,000 riders boarded trains on its first day.

Five months later, the rail line extended to Seattle-Tacoma Airport, providing transportation service to locals as well as visitors.

In March 2016, light rail opened to riders heading toward the University of Washington and Capitol Hill. The stations are connected to each other and downtown Seattle by a 3-mile tunnel.

Building off the momentum, Sound Transit asked voters in 2016 to approve $54 billion light rail plan that would grow the system to 116 miles.
